Recognizing the Signs: When It’s Time to Consider Memory Care Caring for the Whole Person with Love and Dignity Avalon Hillsborough Expansion Enhances Memory Care Way of LifeMemory Care at The Avalon Assisted Living Residence at Hillsborough has doubled its capacity, added significant common space and one- and two-bedroom apartments. An entire floor is devoted to its Generations Village and will help the community strive to meet the ever-growing demand for memory care services. According to the Alzheimer’s Association: “6.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million.”
Enhanced Safety As The Avalon at Hillsborough anticipates the growing need for memory care services, it has implemented significant, new features that will enhance safety and care offerings at the community. Chief among them is the Quake Care Center, a sophisticated, state-of-the-art, real-time location system that takes a proactive approach to resident safety. Residents will have the choice of a stylish, water-resistant pendant or wristband that features an innovative push-to-call button, allowing the individual to send a visual and audible alert to staff. Staff will be called right to their location at a moment’s notice, giving residents and their families greater peace of mind. Not only useful in an emergency, the system can also help staff locate residents for medication reminders, when visitors arrive, and ensures that they are attending meals and the activities they have planned. Devices specially placed in the community help set up a “geofence” and alert staff when residents wander too close to designated high-risk areas.
Enhanced Training In addition to the physical attributes of our community, we pride ourselves on providing specialized training that better enables our caregivers to meet the unique needs of those living with memory loss. All of our caregivers throughout our entire family of companies are becoming Certified Dementia Practitioners. According to the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (CDP), “The CDP certification represents that the front-line staff and healthcare professional has received comprehensive knowledge in the area of dementia care and achievement in completing the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care course/seminar.” These are some of our caregivers who recently became Certified Dementia Practitioners. Memory care is a dedicated, long-term care residential community for people with memory impairment, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, which is intentionally designed to provide enhanced safety and quality of life in a structured environment. A similar level of personal care assistance and community dining, as one would find in traditional assisted living, is a part of the memory care way of life. While accommodations do not include a kitchen for safety reasons, memory care communities feature natural light, calming colors and inviting community spaces. Decorating a private suite with personal possessions brings nostalgia and helps create a home-like, safe and comfortable space. Activities are designed to engage residents without contributing to anxiety, a common symptom of dementia. A routine schedule of activities focusing on memory care, such as exercise, arts and crafts, brain fitness (puzzles and games), and music therapy, contribute to a sense of comfort, security and well being. At the Avalon Assisted Living Residences, our Assisted Living and Memory Care communities are distinguished from others by a family of coordinated healthcare services that is always available to our residents. Recognizing the Signs: When It’s Time to Consider Memory Care
As our loved ones age, we may begin to notice changes in their memory and cognitive abilities. While occasional forgetfulness is normal, persistent and worsening symptoms could be indicative of a more serious condition, such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Although making the decision to explore memory care options for a family member can be emotionally challenging, it is essential to ensuring their safety, well being and quality of life.
These are some key signs that indicate it may be time to consider memory care for your loved one: • Progressive Memory Loss • Impaired Judgment and Decision-Making • Increased Confusion and Disorientation • Decline in Self Care and Personal Hygiene • Increased Agitation and Behavioral Changes If your loved one is experiencing these kinds of symptoms, it may be wise to consult with your physician and consider exploring a memory care community. Unlike standard assisted living, memory care communities specialize in care and support for people with memory or cognitive impairments.
