Tony Esposito was a resident for just two months at The Avalon. But in that short time, our team made a lasting impact on him and his family — and his daughter wanted us to know. 

“My Dad was only a resident for two months,” Tony‘s daughter Toni Lynn Burke shared. “But in that short time, your staff made a difference in our lives.” 

Her words reflect the heart of what it means to work in assisted living and senior care.

Guiding Families Through Life’s Transitions 
​For many families, the move to senior living is emotional and complex. Our admissions and
leadership teams walk beside them every step of the way. 

​“It would be a huge transition,” Toni wrote. ​“Robyn helped me navigate it all socially, emotionally, and financially with friendship, genuine concern, and professionalism.”

This is where compassionate careers begin — with listening, guiding, and reassuring families during moments of uncertainty. 

​Nursing: Skill Meets Compassion
Senior living requires clinical excellence — but it also requires heart.

“Eileen, Michael and David, and all the nursing staff, were always excellent at what they did, whatever it was,” Toni said. “They attended to dad and always listened to his concerns and helped him with his anxiety. They are credits to their profession!”

When Tony’s condition declined, the nursing team stepped in with both professionalism and empathy. 

“Karen was there with a reassuring hug and encouraging words to dad,” Toni shared. “She met the transport team to give all of the necessary instructions.”

During his final weekend, Tony was on hospice, and one nurse remained a steady presence.

“Alyssa would come in, check on me, and make sure dad was comfortable,” said Toni. “She was professional and caring. She shared in my grief. I couldn’t have gotten through those hours without her.”

For nurses seeking meaningful work in assisted living, this is the impact you can have — not just treating symptoms, but supporting families during life’s most vulnerable moments. 

​Aides: Dignity In Every Detail
Our resident aides form some of the deepest daily connections.

​“Angel and Jae, Dad‘s steady aides, both connected with him in a way that helped his transition to living at The Avalon,” his daughter wrote. “They treated him with kindness and dignity, and sometimes they would pop in just to say ‘hi’, and see how he was doing.”

Even when Tony became unresponsive, that dignity never wavered.

“Adora and Ledwina were with dad before he passed away and treated him with tremendous kindness and dignity,” Toni shared. “On the day before he passed away, dad had a moment of clarity when Adora was able to feed him some yogurt. Dad had dysphagia, and it had gotten progressively worse in a short time. She took probably 45 minutes to feed him — but she did.” 

In senior care, it’s not the big events that are remembered the most, but the quiet, everyday moments. 

​Dining Services: Nourishment With Respect
Care extends well beyond clinical support. 

​Tony required specialized meal preparation due to dysphagia. Agnes, Reggie and the dining team embraced the challenge.

“They took to the challenge with open arms,” Toni said. “The staff met with Kristine Juan, the swallow therapist at Bridgeway Care & Rehabilitation who was working with dad before he came to The Avalon, to learn how to thicken his liquids and puree his food.”

“The dining aides helped him navigate the menus and always with a smile,” she added.

For culinary professionals, working in senior living means using your skills to ensure safety, dignity, and enjoyment at every meal.

​Activities: Creating Joy and Connection 
Engagement makes a difference.

“Dad was looking for someone to play poker. Although Jeba, a member of the activities staff, did not know how, she sat with dad — and he taught her how to play blackjack and some other poker games,” said his daughter. “She decorated his door with a wreath that she made and kept an extra eye out for dad, which I appreciated so much!”

​Housekeeping & Maintenance: Respect in the Details
Every role contributes to the resident experience.

From ensuring comfort in the room to stopping for conversation in the hallway, our housekeeping services team plays a vital part in quality senior living.

“Jose was one of the first people dad met at The Avalon. He walked over to dad and shook his hand and welcomed him,” said Toni. “Dad always would stop and talk with Jose for a moment, and Jose would always check dad’s heat or TV if dad asked him.”

“He never ignored his request. Jose understands that these things are of importance to the residents, and he always respects their concerns,” she added.

“Your housekeeping staff is impeccable. They keep the rooms neat and clean, and they are very pleasant to the residents,” Toni continued. “In fact, several of the staff came over to me to offer their condolences, and they said that dad would always remember their names and thank them for coming in.”

Housekeeping and maintenance services are essential because they not only care for the building, they create comfort, dignity, and everyday acts of kindness that make residents feel at home.

“I have never come across anyone at The Avalon who was not pleasant and helpful,” Toni wrote. “It’s clear they enjoy their work and who they work for. This is a credit to your leadership,” she concluded.
